When I was about 5 years, I saw my neighbor dancing ballet in the back yard of his house and I was immediately hypnotized by the mesmerizing and the spectacular executed movements, and I asked my mother to enroll me into the ballet school of my hometown. I have started to take dance classes the next year and danced there till I’ve turned 18 and finished high school.
All those years I’ve transformed my body to perform specific movements for this type of dance and I’ve tried to look as gracefully as possible. It was very challenging physically, emotionally and also intellectually, but I’ve managed to reach a certain level of performance. The rules for becoming a ballet dancer were very strict and required discipline, hard work, commitment and talent, of course.
I also did contemporary and traditional folk dances, which I loved and which widened my horizon regarding the dancing world. But in the ballet world the competition is fierce, and only the best get to be at the top. It was not for me, in the way that I did not want to give my life to this art, so I decided to keep doing it as a hobby and teach dance classes to children in the primary schools. But all these helped me to learn Kizomba better and faster in acquiring the style’s vocabulary movements.
Before starting Kizomba I also did Latino dances like Bachata and Salsa for about two years and then I discovered Kizomba and I fell in love with the beat and the sensual movements.
Learning how to dance, in any particular style, is an on-going process, and is important that you have fun while you dance and enjoy every moment with your partner.
One of the most important lessons that I have learned in order to dance Kizomba was to let go of the strictness of ballet and relax so that I can get into the Kizomba mood properly.
Always remember that in order to achieve balance you have to sacrifice performance.
